Ostrich as the Other White Meat – Who Knew?

I just stumbled on this article and had to pass it on. Ostrich!?! What will we eat next? I’m going to try it out…if I can find out where to get it:).

Ostrich Gets a Standing ‘O’ by Joy Bauer, M.S., R.D., C.D.N.

Looking to try something new? Ostrich is a healthy and delicious lean substitute for any red or white meat.
It absorbs your favorite marinade and ounce per ounce, ostrich provides more protein and iron than chicken, turkey, beef, lamb and pork.
It’s also loaded with zinc – one of the key ingredients for maintaining healthy eyes. Zinc is found in the retina, and helps the functioning of enzymes responsible for eye health.
In people with macular degeneration, levels of zinc in the retina can be very low, so eating zinc-rich foods is a logical first step for preventing and treating macular degeneration. Several studies have confirmed zinc’s role in eye health.
Look for ostrich in specialty stores and/or online. Three ounces cooked ostrich equals:
132 calories
25 grams protein
3 gram fat
5 milligrams iron
4.2 milligrams zinc
